AEW star and former NXT Women’s Champion Athena recently joined Busted Open Radio for an in-depth conversation about her career, including her time in WWE and how she felt like she never stood up for herself enough. Highlights from the interview are below.
Says she never advocated for herself in WWE:
“The reason traveling was the worst part for me is because I didn’t get involved in other things. It was like, ‘Hey, go wrestle.’ When you pitch creatively, it only goes so far. And it’s out of your control. So once it was like, ‘Well, I’ve spoken my piece. They’ll like it, hate it, or tell me what else they think.’ But you know, sometimes I was afraid to speak up and say those things.”
Says stars like Mickie James, Natalya and Charlotte encouraged her to stand up for herself:
“By Mickie [James] and Nattie, even Charlotte [Flair] and some of them would say, ‘Hey, you should do this.’ And I think because I’m naturally so shy that people would say, ‘Okay girl, are you ready for a swim? You’ve been doing these classes for a long time!’ You know, like you’re giving me a push to really gain the confidence to do that. And I think that’s something that’s being transferred now, that I’m trying to get that confidence. It’s like I’m not just one of the most experienced people in the locker room, people sometimes come up to me and say, ‘Hey, what do you think about this?’”
