Kenny Omega became one of the biggest stars in the industry when he took over Bullet Club in New Japan, assisting BC in reaching new heights and setting up some memorable matches.

Rocky Romero recalled how NJPW lead booker Gedo decided Omega would be the next big star during a performance at Bobby Fish’s undisputed podcast. Omega’s rise was helped in part by the departure of former Bullet Club leader AJ Styles from the NJPW.

“So we were all there again, we made the match, right? This is just a day before the Tokyo Dome and I knew what was going to happen because of course, Karl [Anderson] and [Doc] Gallows, we’re really tight and they told me the night before, ‘Hey, we’re going to talk to the boss and let him know we’re out of here and AJ’s going and we’re leaving. right after him’ so… So we all try to make the match, but I remember The [Young] Bucks and I were invested in these two, like we were trying to make the match, but also really trying to see what would happen in this whole conversation when they broke the news to Gedo that they were leaving, they were on their way out. So we kind of looked at the whole thing and that was also the day we saw it – literally, I saw Gedo like, ‘Oh sh*t, you guys are leaving, AJ’s leaving.’ He’s like, ‘Oh man.’

“He totally feels it and then he scans the room a little bit and then he just sees Kenny [Omega] and then it’s like, okay, AJ is out and you could see it in his face. He just looked at Kenny and thought, OK, Kenny is the man now. All this happened at exactly the same time. It was pretty cool and pretty interesting, you know, kinda what happened next because AJ was gone, BULLET CLUB, Gallows and Anderson left, Shinsuke [Nakamura] left and then it was literally like the next night after the Tokyo Dome was the big corner where Omega lifts AJ and drops him on his head and then now Kenny takes over the BULLET CLUB and then you see the rise of Omega’s BULLET CLUB or whatever, yeah, just pretty crazy. crazy time,” said Romero.
