Swerve Strickland appeared on The sessions with Renée Paquette to discuss a wide variety of topics.

While discussing Stickland: not noticed in NXT the first year he was there after making a name for himself in EVOLVE. Strickland later formed the Hit Row group and came over where he became the North American champion.

Despite a successful run in NXT, Hit Row had a short stint on the main roster and was let go. However, Triple H brought the group back, except for Strickland, who is currently in AEW.

“It’s interesting to see people have that thought about me, like I was in the elevator in NXT and said, ‘Oh man, you’re getting a lot of success.’ But at that time, NXT wasn’t talked about at all because that first year I felt like I was a good hand to have. That also built up a lot of that resentment that started building up a little bit because I the Leo Rushes I transferred Cameron Grimes I transferred the Santos Escobars I did the Bronson Reeds the Austin Theories I kept transferring all these people Even when MSK first came in their debut was against me and I transferred them. I transferred Leon Ruff.”

“So it was just like, okay. I had a few conversations with Triple H. I’m like, ‘When am I going to be your man? What do I need to be your man?’ I’ve had three concrete conversations with him. I will never forget them that I have always pushed for. I even texted him one day. I was like, ‘Can I have a conversation with you?’ He said, “Is there anything you can talk to Matt Bloom about?” I was like ‘No.’ He said, “Okay, okay.” I would stare holes in him all day during production. I wanted him to feel the heat I felt as I looked at him. When we finally had a conversation, I thought, ‘What is your reluctance to put the ball in my hands?’ He gave me answers that felt like they were repeated answers from this person asking him, this person asking him, and the previous one.”

“I was like, okay, I get it. So I knew tapping that egg wouldn’t work. So I’m like, okay, here I am. I have to be creative. I have to think again. So I went to Shawn, and Shawn Michaels really started to sit down with hours of tape studies. Just me and him, no distractions, not in the middle of the TV day. It’s just me and him in the office. We watched me and Matt Riddle from DEFY wrestling. We’re looking at PCW Ultra stuff from LA. We looked at other things and said, ‘Okay, I want to see what brought you here. Why are you here? That’s the person I want to see.’ That turned everything around for me.”

“So it took a year to do all those things to get to that point to be able to do that, to have that ability to even get that conversation, that window open. Then it was just like, okay, cool, and That’s where it really started. That’s where my hair color started to change. They put the grills in my mouth and all that other stuff. I really started getting into the hip-hop field. Me and Bronson had another TV game, Jonah, and we just kept going because I felt like Triple H didn’t feel like I was intense enough I was like, okay, so we just broke up, boom, had a blast, then the light went out for them. Then Stephanie McMahon came up and said, ‘You’re like my favorite heel. You’re my favorite heel here,” and then everything kind of went into a whirlwind and went up from there.”
