In the latest edition of his Gentleman Villain podcast Lord William Regal shared a chilling story about a time when he teamed up with the great Larry Zbyskzo in Florida, and how he tried to get more heat after winning the match by grabbing the American flag. Hear what happened in Regal’s memory below.

Says that after defeating Zbyskzo, he wanted to take the fire to the next level and remove an American flag:

My job is to make you hate me, if necessary, and I was really good at getting people to dislike me. A lot of people know the comedy thing, but if I wanted to make a room full of people, an arena full of people who don’t like me and really don’t like me, I know how to do it and I was very good at that. Coming to the WWE was one – things started to change and it was more of a character issue. When I was at WCW, people didn’t like me, and now you go back and look at it as comedy. I have no reason to lie to you about these stories. I came from Macon, Georgia one night with six guys who broke into my car and I had to run them all away. I wrestled with Larry Zbyskzo at the old Coliseum in Jacksonville, Florida one night when I did the thing with him in ’94 and I was only 26, just turned 26 and all about getting heat, you used to have to go up on a stage, such as up some stairs on a stage and then from the side of the stage to the dressing rooms. A huge American flag hangs on the wall at the back of the stage. Me, I just beat Larry Zbyzsko and captivate people and captivate and captivate and that was it all back in the days when it was easy to – it was ‘USA,USA,USA’. I don’t think and really don’t know any better, because I’m 26 and… you know, I’ve been traveling the world for four years and haven’t really noticed anything that was going on in the world. Never know American history.

How a cop pointed a loaded gun at him and told him not to touch the flag:

I didn’t learn American history in school. I learned English history [Regal chuckled]. I grabbed and was about to pull this – I don’t know how big it was, but it was huge – a big American flag of the thing and I’m looking at the crowd to my right. When I looked to the left, I felt a tap on my forehead. From the side of the stage was a Jacksonville police officer and when I turned my head there was a gun in my forehead and he said ‘I suggest you don’t sir’ and I went ‘I think you’re right officer” and I just walked off the other side and completely lost my character. I was like, boom, with a gun pointed at my forehead. This isn’t the first time I’ve mentioned this, so I’m not making this up, am I? And I doubt anyone could remember that at the time. Maybe someone else, and I walked to the other side. Fortunately there were two flights of stairs. I went, phew, and had that in my head. The gun was pointed in my head and he said ‘I suggest you don’t sir’ and I walked off the stage and went down the stairs and again, people think I’m a tough guy, and people have seen me doing things at certain times and we can tell stories about that. I went down the stairs, found a quiet place and I was shaking because I’ve seen a lot of things in my time but I would never – Revolver stuck right in my head and a cocked Revolver… It was about getting as much hate as possible possible.
